Building Performance-Based Curriculum with the WIDS Model

About the WIDS Course Design Workshop

The WIDS Course Design Workshop is a collaborative, hands-on training course where faculty members or curriculum designers develop and implement educational/training curricula. The workshop guides participants through a structured planning process, including defining learning outcomes, aligning assessments, and developing interactive, student-centered learning activities.

In this workshop, participants will design a curriculum based on performance-based learning principles through systematic processes using the WIDS framework. Participants will develop or revise a summary of curriculum outcomes, including curriculum information, competencies, performance criteria, and learning objectives. They will then use these curriculum outcomes to create learning plans, lesson plans, and performance assessment tasks.

WIDS Course Design Certificate

Participants who successfully meet performance criteria will receive the WIDS Course Design Certificate, demonstrating competence in performance-based curriculum design using the WIDS model and software.

  1. Illustrate the role of performance-based learning in the teaching and learning process
  2. Set up a course in WIDS, including course information, roles, and related outcomes
  3. Write competencies that are measurable, observable, and aligned to Bloom's Taxonomy
  4. Develop performance standards including assessment strategies and criteria for all course competencies
  5. Write learning objectives that support mastery of each competency
  6. Create performance assessment tasks, including checklists and rubrics, for course competencies
  7. Design learning plans that guide learners through the full learning cycle
  8. Create a WIDS syllabus that reflects all course outcome summary components

Prerequisites

No prior WIDS or instructional design experience required. Participants must have access to the WIDS software through their college site. Basic computer skills recommended.

What Participants Bring

Participants select a real course to work on during the workshop — a course they currently teach or plan to develop. By the end of Day 5, they have a complete, performance-based course outline ready for use.
